The Brighton show was rounded off by our special guest act, Grizzly Bailey, accompanied by Jordan Bailey.
Gavin Fitzgerald – You convey the story in the song so well. Just build in a strong hook too to give a broader appeal, click here for songwriting tips – how to write a chorus. Enjoyed the lyrics and the melody, it just needed something extra for a change sooner than when the bridge came in. Performance wise try and engage more with your audience and in particular more eye contact. Lovely sentiment to the song.
Tom Nied – Vocally it wasn’t that clear what the message of the song was, although the melody was sultry and cool. Performance wise need to try and perform more, use more expression and eye contact. There were some interesting phrases and licks that were enjoyable. Some more dynamics in the voice would be beneficial, click here for advice on musical dynamics.
Brighton Song Writers Wanted – Feedback from Industry Judges
Reece – Watch your mic control as your volumes are dropping when you turn you head to change chords. Need to practice and avoid looking down as much as it’s also stopping you performing. Melody is really catchy and you can imagine this on an American film in a driving sequence. Nice dynamics between the verse and chorus, has real potential and would sound great with a band!
Rory Knox – No Goodbye; Catchy chorus melody. Too much going on would never recommend playing over a backing track as it ruins that live feel and gets a bit messy. Would have been better presented stripped down. Good structure and easy to follow lyrics. Could make some adlibs work to good effect here which you aren’t utilising at present, click here for more on musical dynamics. The Void; Sweet and simple song. The melody is nice. Again not loving the backing from the keys, there’s a little something post 80’s political depression going on here with both the sound and sentiment. The song lacks a real killer hook to keep the song in people’s heads, click here for songwriting tips – how to write a chorus.
S1mple – This borders on embarrassing, yet your message has good sentiment but as a poem not a song. Heart felt and honest. Would like to hear a rap from you. Lovely words.
Busker Tom – Good projection but take care not to drown out your vocal and the message within the song. As performers try and engage more. The song has real potential. It was simple but was catchy, that’s important for any song! Struggled to hear a few of the lyrics, so give your diction more attention.
AMhP – It’s a lovely song but no real hook to latch on to, click here for more songwriting tips – how to write a chorus. Dynamics can also help to drive through the message of the chorus, click here for tips on musical dynamics. Really enjoyed the guitar picking and the lyrics were emotive. Sweet melody and a lovely sentiment! You’ve got a really memorable song.
Mandy Woods – Lovely arrangement, especially with the strings. The lyrics could contain more poetry and less reality. Not the best of starts; always make sure you check your tuning. Love the lyrics and message of the track. The lyrics flow well and an easy song for people to relate too. Never stop as you just highlight the mistake and we don’t know the song. As performers try and engage with each other so we can connect more to you.
Feedback for Brighton Song Writers Wanted
Jayne Snow – You have a lovely vocal but perhaps lacking in performance experience. Audience participation is always a tricky on, click here for tips on audience participation. Nice melody and sentiment!
Giovanni – Simple lyrics but a cracking melody which you imagine being a hit across Europe. Just need to rework the deliver so it focuses and drives the chorus through. It’s a fun chorus so just keep banging out that message. The joy factor was a 10! Light hearted catchy number.
Mee and the Band – Very funky, think you could really benefit from going higher with the chorus hook to take it somewhere even better. Nice melody and an interesting structure, click here for more on song structure. Original and creative. Interesting disco funk fusion!
Holly Fraser – You have a sweet sound but you lack that performance experience to really work the song to its best potential. Song is a little repetitive. The delivery was sweet and the lyrics were heart felt and honest. Good potential here. Some really nice lyrics in the verses, it felt like it needed something extra to take it to the next level. You’ve got so much potential, and impressive writing for someone so young.
Liam and George – The performance would benefit from a better connection between performers and the audience with eye contact and thus engaging with us. Lovely melody and passionate delivery. Interesting shift towards the end. Catchy chord progression.
Kat White – Like the lyrics at times and at other times they drift. It needs to lead from the sarcastic line on a similar drive and punch as that works well but a bit isolated. Really enjoyed the catchy rhythmic chorus. Unique vocals. Good structure and arrangement of the song!
