Brighton Feedback for the Future Music Songwriting Competition
Lottie Cullingford – Your song had a nice beat and lyrics that scanned well. You could benefit from pulling in influences from outside blues for more unique writing; working with another songwriter could help you with this. Click here for more information on song writers – working with other song writers.
Holly Fraser – There was an interesting extra bar in the chorus with a nice, dry lyric. Dynamics will help you to drive through the chorus to stand out more. Click here for tips on varying musical dynamics.
Busker Tom – All About You; a little Oasis sounding and a nice harmonic breakdown; not convinced the chorus is catchy enough. Click here for songwriting tips – how to write a chorus. How I Wish; Again, this was a nicely structured song but perhaps lacking that defining chorus to really stand out as a potential hit. As a performance it would benefit from you adding more dynamic. Click here for more information on musical dynamics.
Jenny Lyne Sessions – One Last Kiss; A deep meaningful song but a little too cliché lyrically and needed a stronger hook. Click here for advice on song structure for songwriters.
Brighton’s Songwriting Competition Feedback
Elouise Mockler – You Are; Whoever this is written about must be a great person but as a song perhaps it’s a bit too personal for an audience to completely relate. I See You; This song flowed better and we felt a stronger emotional connection to it. Perhaps try and not repeat the same lines and rewrite them to be less repetitive in the sentiment. Click here for more advice on writing a song.
Mandy Woods – Online Romeo; Very topical subject which made it easy to relate too. The chorus was a little weak and you would benefit from reworking this to make the song even better. Click here for songwriting tips – how to write a chorus. All Along; There is a theme with the songs and you might want to look at including a variation of subject matters. This song also lacked a defining hook; click here for advice on song structure for songwriters.
S1mple – Nice lyrics and good meaning. It was more like poetry than a song. Perhaps look to work with another songwriter to turn this into more of a song vibe. Click here for information on song writers – working with other song writers.
Jo Downing – This was lyrically developed however the lyrics and the music didn’t seem to fit. It was difficult to picture the song beyond the backing track. You would benefit from getting someone else to perform it as you were out of tune in places. Click here for information on how to find musicians – find musicians to work with.
Brighton Songwriting Competition – Feedback
Alex Poulter – Loved your vocal tone which made it easy to hear the message of the song. As a performer, try and connect with your audience more. Eye contact is one good way to assist with this; click here for live performance opportunities which will help you develop this skill. Vocally just a struggle on the chorus a good vocal coach could assist you to improve your projection and range.
Martin Walsh – On The Up; Nice, positive content; try and convey that in the performance more as it’s a fun song. You could benefit from potentially change the guitar chords to make the chord progression a bit more dynamic. Click here for more information on musical dynamics. Doubling Street; This had a blues feel to it. It was hard to hear all the lyrics as you drowned them out and lacked a little in vocal projection to be heard clearly. Click here for more information on live performance opportunities which will allow you to practice perfecting the sound levels when playing.
Rory Knox – No Goodbye; This was a really well-constructed song and you have a nice voice. The Void; Good lyrical content and we liked the drifty sentiment. As a performer you are a bit static so if you’re going to be the performer of your song you are going to need to include more dynamics. Click here for more information on live performance opportunities to help you perfect this.
Jayne Snow – Nice, well-structured track using great blues scale. Your vocals project the song clearly and with power. Now just continue to perfect your performance. Click here for more information on live performance opportunities which will allow you to do this.
