Bristol Songwriting Competition Feedback
Jack Hill – Your lyrics were very good and you have a strong vocal. Now look to edit the intro as it was quite long and work on adding dynamics and eye contact to your performance. Click here for advice on musical dynamics.
Isobel Sutton – Should I tell you; This was a nice track with a nice lead into the chorus. We liked your use of head register and modulation. Stop don’t go; Nice melodic start and good use of the tempo to drive through the chorus. Perhaps you would benefit from varying the phrasing of the hook to make it not as repetitive. The one for me; Not as instantly catchy as the previous two but overall you have lots of songwriting potential. Click here for some tips on song structure for songwriters to help you tweak the structure of these.
Keiron Marsh – It’s great you can write to convey such emotion; your performance was very moving. Now look to enhance the song with a stronger hook and more dynamics – potentially aiming to lift more in the chorus. Click here for advice on musical dynamics.
Lucianna Kay – You are drowning out your vocal and thus it’s difficult to hear the lyrical content. Click here for tips on playing the guitar to ensure you get your sound levels right.
Olivia Kneath – You had good lyrical content that was relatable, but as a performer watch your breathing. You now need to add more chord progression and use dynamics to bring colour and life to the song as it needs more emotion. Click here for advice on musical dynamics.
Bristol Feedback for the Future Music Songwriting Competition
Hannah Wall – You have some nice lyrical content but perhaps look to rework the structure to focus on bringing a standout chorus. Click here for songwriting tips – how to write a chorus.
Nola King – It sounded like you have a story and message in the song but you need to work on ensuring there is a clearer structure of the chorus/verse/bridge. Click here for advice on song structure for songwriters. Performance wise a good vocal coach will be able to assist you with projection and control to be even better.
Tom Josling – This song was nice on the ear and we liked the repetition as it made the song catchy. Now work on using your eyes to connect with the audience. Click here for live performance opportunities which will allow you to do this.
Tobias Robertson – Don’t tell me; Loved the message and conviction to the performance. The song had a good structure and dynamics. Safe & Sound; This song had more heart felt lyrics which people will be able to relate too but would benefit from having more direction as we felt like we were waiting for it to go somewhere. Click here for advice on song structure for songwriters.
Lawrence Westincott – This song was built well with good structure; we liked the way you layered the chorus line. It was very catchy with good lyrics. Now continue to perfect your performance. Click here for live performance opportunities which will allow you to do this.
Mia Anne – This song was too short which meant we couldn’t hear the hook or what it was about. Click here for more tips on writing a song which will help you lengthen it.
Elena – Addiction; With this song you need to commit to what is the main vocal line and structure around that. Rise; This song had lovely lyrics, a good structure and builds well but would benefit from more lift in the chorus. Click here for songwriting tips – how to write a chorus.
