Lauren Page – Wow, what a performance! That felt like a hit song already… This could easily be sung by many of the great singers, so well done. A beautiful ballad with sincerity in the lyrics! You’ve got a strong song structure, with a few tweaks this could be perfect, click here for advice on song structure.
Tendayi Sutherland – Liked the vibe, but it wasn’t clear what the song was about and didn’t lock us in to chorus hook, click here for songwriting tips – how to write a chorus. Better chord structure would help to drive through the chorus. More melodic range between the sections could help this improve.
Essex UK Songwriting Contest – Feedback from Industry Judges
Pia Harmony – As a performer you can see the improvement in your delivery. The song is very easy to relate to and very current. Chorus would benefit from a slight rework as the lyrics don’t flow or scan as well as they could, songwriting tips – how to write a chorus. Really enjoy this song; it’s got a catchy hook! Try to change the melodic shaping so your songs are different styles.
Paul Ramsay – Good connection to the song emotionally, perhaps needed more lyrics and chords as it just didn’t have enough. Nice lyric about the thread that held me together but needed to build from that. With more chord changes it would help the song stand out more. You need a strong hook to make the song catchy, songwriting tips – how to write a chorus.
Simon Lyon – Great how you convey the story in the song, you are a fantastic story teller. A lot of people will be able to relate to this. The song really builds well, good highs and lows. With a proper band behind it, this song could be amazing. Try to bring more dynamics to it to keep it even more interesting, click here for advice on musical dynamics.
Anna Wells – Seemed to take a while to get going, was a little stop start…perhaps look to rework the intro verse and bridge into the chorus, songwriting tips – how to write a chorus. The transition from the chorus to the 2nd verse was a little bumpy. I’d also look to work in dynamics to the chorus lines it’s a bit too straight, click here for advice on musical dynamics.
Feedback for Essex UK Songwriting Contest
Richard Cope – Liked this song, it was really deep and meaningful. It may be difficult for everyone to relate too as a song however. Richard you gave a great performance! The song felt a little disjointed, work on your song structure to bring it to the next level, click here for advice on song structure. It was refreshing to see a snippet of yourself in the performance.
Jerome Anthony – Your guitar playing was fantastic, really made the song. We loved the smiley and lyrical content. You may want to consider working with a vocal coach to be even better vocally. Your song has a good structure, click here for advice on song structure.
Stan Harding – What a lovely sentiment to the song and got the biggest cheer of the day! Try to rehearse enough that you know the lyrics well. Couldn’t bring it out in June, but could be a Christmas no.1!
Tom Frost – A well-structured song but needed that defining hook or hooks to really stick in our head and carry on the journey, songwriting tips – how to write a chorus. The chorus and verse used the same melody notes, adding in more varied dynamics would help the song, click here for advice on musical dynamics. It felt like a familiar song.
Dale Bennett - Flowed very well post chorus in particular. The song was well structured and engaging, click here for more advice on song structure. Good song, could hear a band playing it with strings. Sounds a bit like an upbeat Sam Smith song? There are lots of hooks in the verses and choruses which are catchy enough to stick in people’s heads. There’s lot of potential for this song.
