The music industry panel included:
- Gerry Driver, of Photo Groupie/Flea Magazine
- Martamaria, Guinness World Record Holder of widest vocal range
- Jake O’Neill, of Samurai Sound
- Mike Freeman, singing teacher and musical theatre & choir director
Louis Perritt – Nicely put together, the song flows well. Great catchy melody. Unfortunately the chord progressions felt a little too simplistic. The middle section lost its way in place, but working with a simply structure, click here for more advice on song structure.
Leila Grace – Reminds me of Norah Jones in places. The song was soulful and poetic. The first and second part of the song didn’t seem to blend well. There’s some nice ideas in this song, the structure just needs more work to help it flow, click here for tips on song structure.
London Songwriting Competition – Feedback from Industry Judges
Vava – Good structure and a catchy chorus that you can imagine being played on the radio! It’s very repetitive which can help it be catchy but in this case the chorus seemed a little too basic. Work on your exit from the chorus into the verse/ middle 8. Strong potential here.
Harriet Langley – Nice use of minor chord progression. Good use of light and shade in the music. Can’t imagine this on the radio, simply because it’s difficult for the average person to follow it. It’s a well-structured song. Just to work on the lyrics so they bring more impact to the song, click here for tips on how to write a song.
Katerina Sharkova – Has a lot of potential. Very catchy melody. Great light and shade in your performance. Got a bit lost trying to follow the structure of the song, click here for information about song structure. Bringing more dynamics into this song could help it; click here for musical dynamics advice.
Lillie Jamieson – Nice melody and very interesting lyrics. Continue to work on your structure and play with the space within the music, click here for more on song structure. It’s a very beautiful song but not overly original.
Nick Stephenson – Clear melody running through the song. Very well-structured. It’s sounds like a hit record. Passionate story telling. The melody grabs you right from the start, lyrics nicely compliment the melody. Great energy in the song.
Feedback for the London Songwriting Competition
Chloe Mae – Good potential. Nice to see you writing about things that are age specific. You sound like you have country influences, similar to Taylor Swift. This song could benefit from structural changes, click here for more on song structure. The lyrics may need developing, but more writing them!
James Numbere – Nice melody and structure. One of the catchiest hooks so far, although the lyrics are a bit too juvenile. Great feel to this song! You should audition for Open Mic UK too!
Elyss Daya – Good potential. Bridge and chorus are catchy, but the chorus could do with developing further. Good understanding of song structure, click here for more on song structure. Bring more dynamics to the performance, click here for advice on musical dynamics.
Stella Hensley & Chris Newman – Awesome songwriting! Your song is very engaging and emotional. Very professional composition. The guitar riff is so catchy. Great rhythm structure and feel. I could really image this song with some strings.
Nubienne – Great feel. Enjoyed your singing and rap. Lovely versatility. Clever truthful lyrics. Personally my favourite performance of the day (Jake, from Samurai Sound). Love the beat and vibe of accompaniment. The lyrics need a little work, but you’ve got something to tell and that comes through.
Andre Brito and Melanie Spencer – You’re an amazing storyteller. The music or melody could be more varied. Big pop ballad for a big belting singer. It’ a good emotional song, unfortunately there isn’t anything to make it stand out from the crowd.
Mike Donaghy – Lovely story. Song with poetic lyrics. Your deep lyrics tell your story so well. Not sure about the structure of your song, click here for tips on song structure. Very simplistic, yet haunting and engaging.
London Songwriting Competition – Regional Final Feedback
L Kassidy – Brilliant ideas to a theme that has been written about so much! Nice catchy melody. Great potential here. Maybe not the most original sounding song but the composition is strong! Catchy chorus! Great pop song!
Lucy Lockyer – Good understanding of structure. Nice lyrical sentiment. Catchy parts to song but not enough variation, the same chords seemed to be repeating over and over.
Timothy Cowen – Could hear this song on the radio. Chorus really sticks in your head. Very powerful song. Well structured. There’s good potential with this song, keep developing it!
James Laurence – Good funky feel. Very Stevie Wonder influenced. Great song. Well performed, you’ve got a really catchy chorus here! Very relevant to the Top 40 at the moment!
Josh – Emotional song that’s been structured well. This is a good song; you’ve got some really honest lyrics in here. Keep being inspired, keep writing music.
