London Songwriting Contest feedback for songwriters at the London performance date.
London Songwriting Contest: The Future Music Songwriting Contest held its London based first round auditions in Dingwalls, Camden this weekend. The London Songwriting Contest saw some of London’s most talented songwriters perform in a bid to impress a music industry judging panel with their talent.
The first round of auditions were judged by music industry specialists who have provided feedback for as many of the acts as possible that performed. Those showcasing their talent in the London Songwriting Contest were wanting to impress the following industry judges:
- Singing teacher Mike Freeman
- Guinness vocal range world record holder Martamaria
- Vocal coach and backing singer for Lily Allen, Yulanda Lindsey
- Talent Talks representative Bobby Mitchell
- Head of Future Music, Chris Grayston

Please be aware views expressed by judges are opinions and subjective to that particular judging panel. These views in no way reflect the views of Future Music, and are published with a view to being beneficial to the performing acts and their songs. London Songwriting Contest – Feedback

Tim – First song; We found your song captivating and engaging. The Circle; This song was interesting and energetic with good dynamics which maintained our attention. Keep perfecting that performance now. Click here for information on live performance opportunities which will allow you to do this.
Jamie – The start to your song was good but we felt the chorus would benefit from being strengthened. Click here for songwriting tips – how to write a chorus.
Echo wants their voice back – This was a nice, passionate song which engaged us. We felt you would benefit from improving your connection with the audience when performing. Susannah – This song had nice, interesting song writing. It had a strong chorus but would benefit from some strengthening of the verses. It may be beneficial to have another songwriter look at this and help tweak it with you. Click here for more information on song writers – working with other songwriters.
James – This is the night; This song had a strong opening with clever lyrics which we really liked. You would benefit from having a shorter intro on this song. Click here for more information on the importance of ensuring you have a strong intro when writing a song. Right; This was a good, soulful song which left us wanting more. The topline was both engaging and exciting.
Feedback for the London Songwriting Contest
Thaichi – This song conveyed a beautiful message.
Lola – One way; This song was simply excellent. We loved your passion and magnetic personality. Ask me to stay; This song was beautiful and very engaging with good dynamic. It was both soulful and very advanced. We felt it would be good if you used more of your vocal range. Louis – Rough Seas; This song showed great potential with a clever use of melody. It told a great story and had a good topline. June; This song incorporated mature themes and advanced, emotive writing. It was soulful with very strong phrasing. Maybe; This song was extraordinary and showed great talent but could benefit from additional dynamics. Keep practising your performance to ensure it has maximum impact. Harriet – This was a catchy and captivating song with good hooks and a great tune.
Florin – Alive; This song had a good use of melody but would potentially benefit from having someone else singing it. The second song had a good use of rise and fall but would benefit from a reduction of rhyme in the verse. Click here for more information on why you don’t need to over use rhyme when writing a song.
Lucy – This was a great catchy song with a good theme which we really enjoyed. We felt that it would benefit from some additional singing practice to perfect it. Click here for information on live performance opportunities which will allow you to do this.
Future Music London Songwriting Contest
Michael – Fisherman’s daughter; This song was imaginative with a good story and strong topline. It was a beautiful performance which took us on a journey. End up home; This was a likeable and emotive song which told a nice story. This is where I call my home; This song was excellent with a great use of melody but we felt you could improve the connection with your audience when performing it. Kacey – Same old; This was a clever and catchy song which told a good story. It was a strong performance which showed passion. The second song was punchy, catchy and clever.
Adam – This song was a little repetitive and would benefit from some additional dynamics. Click here for more information on why you it’s not beneficial to overuse rhyme when writing a song.
Cheryl – The vocals were good but we felt the lyrics could be strengthened. Perhaps it would be beneficial to get another songwriter to take a look at your lyrics and suggest some improvements. Click here for more information on song writers – working with other songwriters.
L Kassidy – The first song had a bold topline although the melody would have benefitted from some variation. The second song was very catchy, contemporary and modern – we could imagine hearing it on the radio.
Lily – Shoebox; This song was quirky and emotive with a strong topline and mature theme. We felt this song has good potential but think you needed to get the breakdown in earlier. Click here for more information on improving structure when writing a song. Apocalyptic fantasies; You have a nice voice which would now benefit from some strengthening.
Roger – This song had catchy chords but would benefit from some work on the melody. Perhaps getting another songwriter to help you tweak this would be useful. Click here for more information on song writers – working with other song writers.

London Songwriting Contest – Future Music Songwriting Contest
Once through the audition rounds of the contest there will be Songwriter Awards for Regional and National winners in the UK.
Winners of the Songwriting Contest will be asked to perform at a Grand Final showcase on a stage that has hosted the likes of Mumford & Sons, Ellie Goulding, Coldplay and the Foo Fighters at Dingwalls, a world-renowned music venue right in the hub of London’s music scene in Camden.
