Reading Songwriters Wanted To Impress Music Industry Judges – Feedback
Deano – This was a jolly and uplifting song, a little The Smith’s like at times which is never a bad thing! It had a catchy chorus, but make sure you completely commit to it so that it leaves a greater impression. Now continue to perfect your performance. Thomas Rawson – This was a good, current–feeling folk song with a good theme and thoughtful lyrics. Remember dynamics when performing and potentially look to include a focal lyrical hook. Click here for more information on musical dynamics.
Georgia Scott- This was a powerful song with lyrics from the heart. It sounded very commercial and catchy but would potentially benefit from rephrasing and repetition of the hook line. Click here for songwriting tips – how to write a chorus.
Jenny Bracey – This was a very intense song which grabs the listeners attention. It had a good chorus and is built well. Now potentially look to give the chords a chance to breathe as the guitar work is always strong and complex and this is maybe too much at times. Click here for some helpful guitar playing warm ups.
Izzy F – Spaces; This was a great song and we liked the way the 2nd verse kicked in, but the backing CD was very quiet to start with then very loud, so look to compress the backing track. No Turning back; This song started modestly but it flowed nicely and has a good ‘lounge’ vibe. These were thoughtful lyrics for someone so young, it would benefit from more of a hook that Spaces achieves though. Monster; This was a great pop song with a nice driving rhythm which could be produced to give it more of a R n B vibe. We liked that you got the hook out there, but now it needs to be enhanced lyrically. These songs were all good but would benefit from a fuller production behind them. Mathew George – This song had lovely lyrics and was a thoughtful love song. Now look to build a stronger chorus to differentiate it from the verses and potentially change a few of the lyrics to make it catchier. Click here for songwriting tips – how to write a chorus.
Juliano – Circus; This song had a good theme to the title and was well structured with a good build in to the chorus. Enough; This song had a good intro and verse chords, but would benefit from having a more defined chorus and getting a vocal hook in earlier. In general you have a good vibe but going forwards make sure to watch your guitar tuning and diction. Click here for some helpful guitar playing warm ups.
Darren Rampton – Battlefield; This song had sensitive chords and you have a nice tone which really helped to convey the message in the song. We think it could work well as a remix (think Avicii). It would benefit from repeating a chorus line. Ballad of Emily White; This song conveyed a good narrative but perhaps lacked a powerful chorus hook. Click here for songwriting tips – how to write a chorus.
Samson – Loved the theme and content of the song; the unusual lyrics are memorable. It was thought-provoking and there was a good build into the chorus. Now continue to perfect your performance. Click here for live performance opportunities which will allow you to do this.
Rushil Ranjan – Seven years; This song had a good chord choice and rhythm. Going forwards, it now needs a more defined chorus to build in to something powerful – or it needs to kick in sooner, don’t leave the chorus until the end of the song. For us; Like Seven Years, this song also had a nice melody and vibe but you now need to drive through that chorus. Look to work the dynamics and also include some lyrics which really stick in your head. Click here for more information on musical dynamics.
