The Winners Songwriting Final saw all of the best songwriters from across the UK take to the stage in their efforts to win the title of ‘Future Music’s Songwriting Competition Champion’.

SONGWRITING TIPS – FEEDBACK

Afnan Prince – What a way to kick off the show! Awesome vocal and such a great vocal range. Be careful not to give too much too soon though, try and build up the dynamics more so when you really go for it the audience are really wowed. A very talented young man!

Steve Young & Gemma Mewse – This song sounds like it’s already been a hit, it’s a great love song.  Your vocals complement each other so well and the harmonies are so tight. Great connectivity and communication and good mixture between vocal parties.

Tommy Lloyd – A very nice pop song that would probably work well as a film sound track. Lyrically it’s a bit repetitive you could look to expand the range of lyrics to be even better. Try and add more dynamics to make it catchier too, click here for advice on musical dynamics.

Nick Stephenson – Wow you are quite a performer! Great song with lots of energy and very expressive lyrics. Really liked the break down and chorus, it has a good use of light and shade and your guitar work was solid. A very committed performance!

Steve Lowes – Great expression and interpretation of the emotion in the song. The violin gives the song a real atmosphere and presence. Steve has a lovely tone to his vocal to bring it home! We would suggest that you cut the ending down as went on too long.

Mairead Furlong – Awesome pop song and nice little adlib melody hook. Loose the 4 bar guitar break and go straight to the bridge. We would suggest that you make some of the other lyrics into more of a hook too, to back up the core of a fundamentally catchy song.

James Rowland – The song is a good one and does have potential, but it sounds very much like a song written and performed for your set up as a band. It has good energy but it needs a bit more of a punch to really excite us, trying mixing up the structure, it could probably do with a bit of a modern twist.

Loz and Joe – Such potential at just 15! Don’t stop writing as you’ll only get better as you mature and gain more life experiences. Try and work on another chorus and bridge to take it somewhere else as it is a little repetitive. Great harmonies between vocalists.

L Kassidy – Great song and convincing delivery. Your songs always flow so well and have great lyrics. The backing track is well produced however it could be updated slightly as the beat is a bit old fashioned. A great performance though!

FEEDBACK AND SONGWRITING TIPS

Yazzy – Lovely story teller and you convey it so well with the way you scale your vocals up and down the notes. You make the lyrics so believable and we can really connect to the song. Try and make the melody build a bit more by adding more dynamics, click here for advice on musical dynamics, but a great song well done!

Emma Buckley – Great story idea and dynamics, but the song would benefit from adding even more hooks. You performed well, but try and use your vocal more as an instrument within the song and you have a great voice.

Helen Gayle – Electric performance! Visually as an act you could have moved and worked the stage more and engage with each other as performers, click here for some tips on performing on stage. However the guitar work and vocal tone was faultless. Just try not to let the guitar dominate the performance too much, but you both sounded great.

Tabitha Jade – Such a confident performance and good dynamics to keep the interest throughout in repeated sections. Great catchy hook, but try not to overdo the adlibs too much, keep it tidy. The song has a lot of potential though so well done!

James Laurence – Great motown style song. Liked that you worked in the little piano cameo to break up the performance, however it needs a little more production and stops to help your hooks stand out more. Think about how you can update it more like Mark Ronson does to really make it into a potential hit.

Rachelle – This song has hit potential! It’s a great pop song, the build is great and the backing track is great, however it does get slightly messy near the end. Try working on the hook more and this could definitely be a hit song!

John Hawkes – A very catchy song, it reminded us of The Kinks. Just watch the harmonies and duel guitar parts as they clashed in parts. Work on the rhythm to make it even catchier.

Dale Bennett – Potentially a great song, nice tune and good hooks, but try and switch up the chorus more, add more big notes. Nice story line, the audience can definitely relate to it, however it may be a little wordy at points, but it is a very good song.

Mark Cousins – Great song and lovely jazzy vocals, it does get a little lost in the middle with too many chord changes at one point, but other than that it is a very good song.

Tom Auton – It’s a great pop track with good hooks and a nice structure. We can definitely see all the One Direction and 5 Seconds of Summer fans singing to this!
