Southampton Songwriting Competition Feedback

Steve Lowis – Day one; This had a clever arrangement musically, with the violin enhancing the mood and feel of the song. You conveyed strong emotion and should now look to really look to force that vocal hook through. Theme for a dream; This had a beautiful sound, with great lyrics and vocal. It was hypnotic to listen to. Now just continue to perfect performing them live; click here for live performance opportunities.

Laura Greaves – Your song had good lyrics but lacked a lyrical hook. The chorus line came in very late - look to get that in earlier in the song and repeat again at the point it comes in as you performed it today. Click here for advice on song structure for songwriters

Cat White – Endings; This had a nice, catchy rhythm and pace. Take care to ensure the instruments don’t drown your vocals out as they did in the chorus which had a good lift in tempo.  Sarcastic; Like the title and clever twist of lyrics. You are a talented group musically but need to make sure that your lyrics can be heard without the singing becoming shouty. Click here for live performance opportunities which will allow you to practice and achieve this balance.

Oli Shaheer – It was a shame about the laryngitis; however you had clear lyrics which were well written.

Emma Burton – This song had good lyrical content but you need to make sure they can be heard clearly. Now look to inject a hook into the song to lift it – possibly in the middle. Click here for more on song structure for songwriters.

Southampton Feedback for the Future Music Songwriting Competition

Tom Wilson-Croome – This had the sort of melody that everyone would remember with good matching lyrics however it would benefit from more of a hook and a little less repetition. Click here for some tips on song structure for songwriters

Mysti – This song was accompanied by sensitive piano backing which underlined the emotive lyrics – sung within the right level of feeling and emotion. ‘There, air, where’ was a bit too predictable lyrically and lacking dynamics. Click here for some tips on how to include musical dynamics. Why not start the chorus at the start?  Then rewrite the verses from there and look to pick up the tempo.

Debbie Wakeham – We liked the catchy dance beat underlining the tune and the rhythm keeps at a good pace. The lyrics told a story but you need to find someone else who is more of a natural performer to perform the song. Click here to find advice on how to find musicians – find musicians to work with

Jonathan – There is a lot of emotion in your lyrics but the melody needs work. Click here for more advice on writing a song which will help your with this.

Neil Roberts – Bed;  Good story perhaps lacking a hook to leave the listener hanging on when it’s over. Liberty; Again, a nice song but lacking that hook.  Click here for more songwriting tips – how to write a chorus.

Glen Hunt - Your song had a great melody and strong guitar playing. Click here for some helpful guitar playing warm ups
